Recaps
The First Session - The Circles
Based upon "The Circles" by Paul McBride from the Tome of Mysteries.
Session notes by Max, the player of Juniper Jones
Two teenage boys venture into a crop circle outside of Hendersonville, Indiana on a dare. People see lights enter the circle, but none ever come out. Days go by and there are still no signs of the teenagers.
- Tucloc has a premonition of a terrified person running through fields.
- We all ride to the town to investigate the crime scene. We run into a famous UFO Expert, Paddington Reynolds. Juniper and Tucloc attempt to talk to him, he provides very little useful info.
- Juniper talks to the local Sheriff, Wayne Gibbs. He thinks the kids just ran away to get out of their small town.
- Felix left his geiger counter in the library bathroom, but the investigation continues!
- Felix and Jack find drag marks in the field, so they and Marty go into the corn and follow the tracks to the end.
- Marty finds that the tracks led to the center of the corn maze. He notices clean circle markings in the middle of the clearing, imprinted by something large. This is clearly where the murder was done.
- They also notice hoof marks in sets of 2 that lead to storm shelter.
- Juniper and Tucloc go to talk to the farmer who owns the fields. He says he makes crop circles and makes up missing cases to get $$, but he didn't do that this time. He also thinks the kids just ran away.
- Tucloc and Juniper try to investigate the storm shelter, but right as they pick the lock, they are threatened with a shotgun, so they leave.
- Everyone regroups at IHOP!
- Based on the clues and Felix's knowledge, the creature must be a satyr or minotaur. If it's a minotaur, we have to chop its head off. If it's a satyr, we have to kill it with a silver knife.
- 10 pm: we head back to the farm to investigate.
- Paddington's car is there but empty.
- We all go to the storm shelter. Tucloc accidentally discharges his gun, but we're okay for now. There are creepy murals all over the walls depicting the classical greek story of Theseus, except the Minotaur devours Theseus in the end.
- Cut to: Paddington running through the maze with a minotaur chasing him and breathing fire.
- We all head to the crop circle, but we're stopped by the old farmer with a gun. Juniper runs to the crop circle, Jack manipulates the old man to let everyone else go. He wants them off his property.
- Marty throws pocket sand, the old man shoots and misses. Tucloc tries to bolt, Felix gets clipped, Marty makes it to the crops. Jack tries to beat the shit out of the old man.
- Tucloc and Juniper follow tracks, Marty is just....running. The tracks just stop, but new paths develop to the right and left.
- Back to Jack - he keeps beating the old man, who screams "Daddy help me" (cute). The minotaur screams through the night. Jack shoots himself in the foot.
- Felix stabilizes Jack and the everyone (separately) heads to the center of the circle
- Juniper and Tucloc get there first. In the clearing, there's an 8 ft. tall Minotaur and an ancient stone dais with Paddington breathing but unconscious.
- Tucloc traps the Minotaur with Magic and runs in to save Paddington while Juniper distracts the Minotaur. He fails.
- Everyone else arrives at the circle.
- Marty paints a red cross on his chest pulls a sword - of fire apparently - from his chest??
- Jack loses his bicycle.
- Felix shoots the minotaur and gets gored.
- Juniper helps Tucloc, who takes Paddington to the safe side of the circle.
- Marty fails to strike the minotaur with his weird flaming chest sword.
- Juniper makes a little cut on its neck.
- Tucloc takes a shot and loses his gun.
- Marty yells to Felix to ask what would hurt him, even though it's obviously the sword. Felix says it's obviously the sword. Marty runs, charges, and beheads the minotaur.
- The labyrinth no longer moves, all the crops are dying.
- Marty keeps the head of the minotaur as 'proof', strapped to Reg.
- We slide Paddington back into his car and leave.
End of Mystery Questions
- Did we conclude the mystery? Yes
- Did we save someone? Yes
- Did we learn something new? Yes
- Did we learn something about the hunters? Yes.
The Second Session - Death and Docents
Based upon the example mystery in the Monster of the Week rulebook.
Session notes by Max, the player of Juniper Jones
- Open in Felix’s backroom haven. The doors and walls are covered in several years worth of seals and warding spells. Filing cabinets line the walls, Mulder-esque pencils in the ceiling.
- Mystery: Victoria Price, the local news anchor is reporting from the local Natural History Museum. Dr. Jennifer Sophia, Professor Josh Singer, and Michelle Fitzsimmons (a close friend of Felix) were all found dead under mysterious circumstances. Their bodies were partially dissolved, as if by acid.
- Phone Rings - It’s Felix’s hot ex-tinder date and current museum curator, Olivia Worthington. She wants Felix to figure out what happened to tMichelle Fitzsimmons. Mentions that Dr. Kelly Morrison brought new (dangerous) relics back from Egypt shortly before the incident.
- Tucloc has a premonition - mass death with rotting, dissolving corpses
- The voices in Marty’s head (?) tell him to protect Jack Dalton.
- What could this monster be? It’s probably not a pokemon, but perhaps. Cursory google search suggests maybe a hydra or something similar.
- Jack finds a super soaker full of water….or piss? For some reason, he doesn’t want to taste it to find out.
- Marty asks Felix for a tracker, he tries to sneak it onto Jack, who doesn’t want it. Except he does? But consent is important.
- Felix finds an acid test kit that we definitely didn’t use and some holy water hand grenades
- Felix got a new truck - it’s a 2017 Chevy Colorado that he won from telling scary stories at a radio contest, except he didn’t really win because he still had to pay for it (for being so fucking weird).
- Note: 2017 Chevy Colorados are known for their 20% rollover rate
- 7pm: We arrive at the museum, greeted by the Museum Administrator, Chris Larsson. He tells us the museum is closed, but Olivia shows up and gets us in for a “late tour”
- She tells us about the eggs with strange markings that are currently in the Research Wing on the 1st floor and that Francis can get us in.
- Jack has questions: Are the eggs wet? I guess we’ll never know. Also, are there cops here?
- Olivia is obsessed with Dr. Perfect Voice. Must be awkward for Felix. She tells us that Josh died in the Human Origins exhibit, Jennifer died in Geology, and Michelle died in the Koch Hall of Fossils - Deep Time.
- Francis appears to be a nice old lady. She takes us to the 1F Research Wing
- Dr. Kelly Morrison says we have to leave because the labs are being cleaned (sus). Felix plays the mourner card, doesn’t work. Tucloc tries to be weird but just gets a headache. Dr. Kelly Morrison walks away, the door locks with a combo pad.
- Juniper tries to check out the lock but is interrupted by some kind of snake? Worm?
- Felix can tell it’s a Saharan Death Worm. He says that they basically just eat and fuck. Natural defenses are acid venom and localized static electricity generation, but they’re weak to water.
- Instead of going after the literal death worm that we know is weak to water, Jack shoots Marty in the face with the super soaker, ostensibly to make sure it isn’t piss.
- Juniper snatches the gun (accidentally pushing Jack down) and follows the death worm to Mammals exhibit.
- Tucloc goes to help Jack, sees another worm coming from the Oceans exhibit (ironic)
- Felix tells Olivia and Francis to get behind them and tries to throw some holy water, but accidentally tosses his phone into the open water exhibit. Tucloc sees the fail and tries to help with a magic wall, but some venom gets around it and lands on both of them.
- Jack gets Olivia and Francis out to safety
- Reg chases a rat to the Hall of Fossils - Deep Time. Marty follows and sees another death worm under the stegosaurus fossils. Convinces Reg to get one of the bones to play with, bringing the whole thing down on the worm. He calls it a penis snake.
- Back in Mammals - Juniper shoots her worm in the mouth with the super soaker, but gets hit with some venom.
- Back in the Rotunda - Tucloc uses telekinesis to slam a worm into the open water in the oceans exhibit, but gets fucked by Newton’s 3rd Law. The worm dies.
- Back in Fossils - Marty runs to the bathroom by the fossil lab. On the way, he and Reg are both tagged with venom and the worm heads in the opposite direction, toward the Rotunda.
- Mammals - Juniper takes cover and tries to shoot, but Dr. Kelly Morrison tackles her, screaming “Nooooooo we have to study them!!”. The super soaker is knocked from Junipers hand
- Rotunda - Jack notices the worm from the hall of fossils approaching and runs toward Oceans to try to get it to follow. Tucloc and Felix run towards Mammals.
- Fossil Lab Bathroom - Marty stops up the toilets and turns on the faucets to try to flood the bathroom. Reg reminds Marty of his directive to protect Jack.
- Mammals - Juniper pushes Dr. Kelly Morrison off of her and promptly (accidentally) uses her as a human shield. Dr. Kelly Morrison dies.
- Oceans - Jack tries to run toward the bathroom by the Fossil Lab, but gets hit with venom.
- Mammals - Felix tries to throw Holy Water by Tucloc bumps him, he misses, and he gets FUCKED UP with venom.Tucloc gets the worm into the water that spilled from the super soaker using telekinesis.
- Fossil Lab Bathroom - Marty slips and hits his head. Knocks out for a bit.
- Oceans - Jack runs toward Fossil Lab Bathrooms again, tries to pull out his bat to protect himself but drops it. He makes it to the bathroom though
- Mammals - Juniper force punches the worm and grabs the super soaker, but gets pretty hurt. Doesn’t realize what happened with the force punch situation. Tucloc pulls his rifle out and aims, Felix tries to quick shoot with his magnum, but misses.
- Fossil Lab Bathroom - Jack realizes that the door is a push, not a pull, so he gets into the bathroom. He proposes a plan: tp + plunger = water mace? They make 2. In a tragic twist of fate, Marty can’t pull an icicle from his dog’s dick to hurt the worm.
- Mammals - A very hurt and unstable Juniper blasts the worm with water, killing it. Felix has med kits that heal the three of them a little bit. Tucloc loots Dr. Kelly Morrison (respectfully) and gets her badge to get us into the research wing. All three head back to the Rotunda.
- Marty and Jack leave the bathroom and see that the trail from the worm goes up the stairs to the 2F. Jack wets his coat and wraps it around the bat he dropped earlier for a third water mace. They decide to go find everyone else to properly gang bang the penis snake.
- Everyone meets up at the Rotunda. Jack and Juniper swap the super soaker for a water mace, and Marty decides to heal Jack and no one else. We go to 2F
- Worm trail leads to Gems and Minerals. Jack looks for it, but he sees that it went through the room and headed toward Bones. He leads the way with Marty really unnecessarily close, followed by Juniper and Tucloc with the Super Soaker and a water mace, and Felix in the back.
- We corner the worm/penis snake.
- Tucloc squirts.
- Everybody takes some harm, Tucloc uses a luck point to avoid damage.
- Marty launches wet tp from his mace at the worm and kills it.
- Head to 1F Research Wing.
- The Bill of Lading said three eggs. Eggs are…..gone. No eggs, wet or dry, but I guess we’re done here.
- Marty calls for a group hug. Juniper sidesteps that offer, and Marty slips the tracker onto Jack’s coat.
End of Mystery Questions
- Did we conclude the mystery? Yes
- Did we save someone? Yes (⅔ aint bad)
- Did we learn something new about the world? Yes (Water Maces are viable weapons)
- Did we learn something about the hunters? Yes. (Marty’s boss thinks Jack is important, Juniper is….action-oriented)
The Third Session - Its a Mad Mad World
Based upon an episode of Supernatural called "Asylum".
Session notes by Max, the player of Juniper Jones
- The morning after the events of Death and Docent - Chris Larsson, the museum administrator, Hector, a Security Guard, and a sharply dressed man named Robert Mason watch security monitors from the clash with the Saharan Death Worms. The camera moves in as we see Juniper seemingly push the worm away without touching it. Robert calls for a replay, and when played slowly, Juniper’s eyes flash like an animal in headlights. We switch cameras to the rotunda, and the 3 men watch the group as they fight and leave toward Ocean Hall.
- We see a woman in a trench coat swipe her badge at the research wing and briefly enter, then leave, glancing at the camera mounted in the hall. Robert recognizes her as Ms. Talbot and tells Hector to stop. He confiscates the USB containing all copies of the security footage. While his staff is cleaning up the museum’s post-mystery chaos, Robert requests NDAs from all museum employees. Dr. Morrison gets an FBI sponsored closed-coffin funeral, and the museum is cleared of all wrongdoing.
- Fast forward, a week or two later - Our scene opens on a late Thursday night in the abandoned CEDAR GROVE SANITARIUM. Vanessa Hart and Samuel Clark, the local jock/cheerleader couple, are wandering around. They hear a door open, and policeman Tony Young stops them. He escorts the kids from the premises and goes back in to make sure the building is clear. A few hours later, Tony Young is standing on a bridge over the river, yelling “Make it stop!” and jumps.
- Mystery: The hunters are watching tv and see our trusty news anchor, Victoria Price, reporting from EISENHOWER BRIDGE about Tony Young’s suicide. She says that there are no known reasons, and the situation seems strange and out of the blue. Tony leaves behind two kids and a loving family. The team decides to check it out.
- Jack bought backup chambers for the super soaker. He fills one with hot sauce, one with salted Holy Water, and one with Colloidal Silver. He is still holding on to the (now crusty) water mace.
- Marty starts googling info, seeing if he can move into the crime scene? The CEDAR GROVE SANITARIUM was founded in the late 1800’s to house the “criminally insane.” In 1954, patients rioted, fires broke out, and most everyone died. Many people attribute the riots to the mishandling of patients by the head of the facility Dr. Stanley Milgraham, while others say it’s the fault of an unruly patient, Simon Crane. There has been a string of suspicious accidents after teenagers spend the night in the asylum, as a dare or prank.
- In Felix’s absence, Juniper steps in to research the creature. Decides it’s most likely a vengeful spirit(s). Salt will temporarily disable, cold iron will hurt, but to get rid of it have to appease it or salt and burn bones.
- Everybody goes to get salt. Jack gets a wooden stake.
- Peter shows up and Jack introduces him to everyone. Jack fills him in on what happened at asylum. Peter has plenty of salt in his kitchen, so he gets that, plus a bunch of fucking guns with salt shot (turns out we’re in his garage???) and some gasoline/lighter fluid.
- ((World Note: There are 4 types of rounds: regular, salt rock rounds, holy rounds, and silver bullets.))
- Marty hears from his boss. It’s a wild ride!!!! He is transported to empty white room and sees a man in a sleazy business suit. Saul claims to be Marty’s new “handler” as the other guy (Kevin) is on a mission (and an asshole).
- “Can you stop haunting my dog?” “I’ll start working on that one later, you got work to do”.
- Saul asks if he knows his mission, Marty says no. Apparently god’s not around and they (angels maybe?) are impatient for the “final battle”. Dumah, the leader of Gehenna, is Saul’s boss. They are helping with that in order to get to paradise later. Saul explains that people who do bad things go to Gehenna and ”me and the boys” torture him for their sins. But he’s not a demon, he’s a fallen angel with big black wings. Fallen Angel supremacists?
- “Don’t think of it as destruction, just think of it as starting the Armageddon and then we’ll all be in Paradise”. Offers his help for the day, and his advice is just to use the sword. You know the one.
- “Eventually - gonna need to find out the secrets of all the people you’re running around with.”
- Marty and Juniper toke up
- Peter questions how Jack got involved with these people, and Jack is just...tired.
- Everyone gets going.
- CEDAR GROVE SANITARIUM is a large Gothic building with a lot of damage/disrepair, police tape over the entrance. We enter the LOBBY and turn West to head into the MALE WARD with everyone.
- Check out WEST SOLARIUM on the way. Peter unholsters his shotgun, carefully walks up and peeks through door, noting a change in temperature
- There are spirits running around we haven’t noticed, and the biggest threat is the ghost of Simon Crane
- Jack suggests heading to PATIENT BELONGINGS first. Everyone agrees. Jack opens the door, narrowly avoids hugging a rotted corpse fall down as it slams to the floor.
- Meanwhile, Marty is saging the area, and the smoke tends to go to the western direction. Guess we’re headed the right way.
- Jack walks in the room and sees bodies slumped over, some who died violently. Corpses look like they were trying to tear open their own eyes, there’s bite marks, etc. It’s basically a scene of mass hysteria and violence. Marty follows him in and steps over the bodies uncomfortably.
- Jack looks for Simon Crane’s belongings and finds an old stitched doll. with S.C stitched into it. Marty sages it, and Peter seems spooked. Juniper suggests they burn it and go toward the WEST WING. Jack agrees. Marty keeps cleansing the doll. Peter is cowering. Juniper grabs the gas from Peter, puts salt on it, and douses the doll in gas.
- Marty pulls out his weird burning chest sword again. Reg is thrilled . Marty touches the doll with the tip of the sword and it burns to ash.
- Jack tells him to put it away, Marty says hell fuckin no
- DOCTORS OFFICE - Jack tries to kick the door open but gets possessed. He is now very very angry all the time at everything.
- Peter tries to help but also gets possessed.
- Both attack Marty
- Jack escapes influence.
- Marty runs up to Peter and starts talking very quietly and calmly. “It’s okay, it’s okay, calm down.” Lights a J on the sword and blows smoke on him in to get him to chill
- Inside the DOCTORS OFFICE - Wall lined with filing cabinets, some files strewn across the floor. Jack starts searching and he is magically transported to a DARK FOREST. Hears the sound of a horse galloping and sees the Headless Horseman, who says “Time for a little HUNT” and pulls out a sword dripping with ichor. Jack pretends not to be scared and defeats the Horseman (AKA fear) with salt water.
- Inside the DOCTORS OFFICE - Juniper sees “Anger enhancement therapy treatment - not successful. Must try again” over and over again written by Dr. Milgraham. Assumedly “Anger Enhancement Therapy” contributed to the riots.
- Everyone decides to head toward the WEST WING
- A ghost tries to approach in the HALLWAY, but Peter’s gun jams and he gets possessed again
- Jack manipulates him out of it, but the ghost is not a fan of that. Apparently he has electricity powers
- Basically everyone fails their rolls here, until….
- Marty runs and yells while he thrusts at the ghost with his divine flaming sword to draw the ghosts attention.Somehow, we can tell that it was the ghost of Dr. Stanley Milgraham.
- Peter looks for a bone to pick with the Dr. in WARD A, but turns up nothing except corpses of Patrick Bateman, Max Burt, and Charlie Mason, none of whom appear important.
- Back to the ghost - now Juniper gets possessed. Everyone else sees her eyes go solid gold…..interesting.
- Peter’s gun is still jammed
- Marty stands up and charges the ghost, yelling “May the power of christ compel you” and the ghost turns and moves toward him then disintegrates. Marty thinks it must be the sage
- Fun Fact: Dumah (meaning silence) is the thousand eyed angel of death armed with the flaming sword
- Jack and Marty go to the INFIRMARY while Juniper and Peter check out WARD B.
- Reg pisses in the hallway.
- WARD B - Peter opens the door and hallucinates a metric fuck ton of spiders crawling on him. He runs, Juniper snatches the super soaker from Jack and sprays Peter in the face.He realizes that he’s soaked in saltwater and there are no spiders on him. They decide to go back
- INFIRMARY - Jack searches for med supplies
- WARD B - Juniper and Peter find Simon Crane’s ghost in ROOM B4. Juniper uses pocket salt, gets hit, and yells out in pain.
- Marty and Jack arrive to see Peter and Juniper slumped against the wall and the ghost of Simon Crane in salt-induced discomfort.
- Marty calls him ”Caren” instead of “Crane” (badump-tss)
- Jack squirts the ghost with his salt water, pushing him towards Marty, who does his exorcism trick again. Simon Crane disintegrates. Reg is thrilled again.
- Marty suddenly remembers that Reg’s love for bones must show up in every mystery, but there’s too many bones here for that to be helpful.
- Juniper suggests arson, but that won’t work. She notices there’s a body on the floor in ROOM B4. The shirt says Simon, so Juniper salts, Peter dumps gas, and Marty lights it with the tip of his flaming sword.
- Sudden Voice: “Hey what’s going on here?” A man in a nice suit with a flashlight and a .38 shouts from the entrance of WARD B.
- “Oh you’re the group from the museum. Alright, where’s the pothead?” Jack indicates that it’s the one with the flaming sword and the man walks toward him.
- “Flaming sword? That’s a new one.” He asks who came up with the water mace, Jack gets defensive but he says it’s good thinking on his feet. He gives Jack a business card, which says Agent Robert Mason, Section 13.
- Robert gives Juniper a healing epipen injection.
- Time to look for Dr. Stanley Milgraham’s bones
- MALE THERAPY ROOM (2F) - As usual, bodies everywhere. Deep in the pile, one body stares face up with Dr. Feelgood carved into his forehead. Robert confirms the identity.
- Juniper and Peter do their thing again
- Marty is pissy because Robert and Peter call him sword boy (ETA: FLAME Sword boy😂). He holds the sword like a golf club and bashes the corpse’s head. Dr. Stanley Milgraham dissolves in ashes.
- No ectoplasm for Jack
- IHOP time
End of Mystery Questions
- Did we conclude the mystery? Yes
- Did we save someone? Yes
- Did we learn something new about the world? Yes. Section 13 exists, whatever that is.
- Did we learn something about the hunters? Juniper’s eyes glow
The Fourth Session - Escape From the Watcher's Realm
Session notes by Max, the player of Juniper Jones
- We open on a briefing room with large tables and a raised stage, on which Robert Mason stands, providing updates to the Director. He flips through stills of the museum fight and starts his presentation
- “On the night of October 10, a group of 5 people infiltrated the Natural History Museum, where they fought and killed a number of deathworms. During this, one Sofia Talbot, known dealer of occult objects absconded with 3 eggs. The next morning my team arrived to secure the corpses and procure NDAs from those on the premises. 2 weeks later, I met this group at the Cedar Grove Sanitarium, where we salted and burned two corpses”
- The presentation continues, with Robert Mason flipping through the team’s photos and introducing them. Director wonders why Felix and Peter sound familiar, and Robert Mason informs him that they have utilized their skills in previous challenges. Peter tracked down a cell of vampires, allowing an inside agent to rise in the ranks. Felix works as a middleman for procuring objects of a ...questionable nature. Robert Mason also mentions that he’s trying to figure out who Marty’s boss is, as well as the nature of Juniper’s supernatural touch, and is keeping a close eye on both of them.
- Wednesday night - Peter drinks whiskey alone on his couch, Felix is at chess club (he’s average at best), Marty greens out in the back of the van, and Juniper is at a rave in the warehouse district of a city a few hours away. Each person sees a distinct blue glow on the edge of their vision, and then they all suddenly appear outside the gates of SLUMBERHAVEN, a Victorian age seaside village. The town gates are open, and the team sees lamps glowing a dull read over the streets. Heat lightning radiates through the stormy sky.
- Juniper thinks this is the most realistic trip she’s ever been on and Marty definitely didn’t bring enough weed.
- Peter heads to the gate and then there’s some scary lightning and a loud thump behind the group. He turns around and there is a HUGE Man in blood soaked overalls, what may have been a white shirt at some point? And worst of all a glowing old school divers helmet, literally bolted into his collarbones.
- Weapon of choice for him? Just some barbed wire, nbd. For us? Well, for some reason, Felix takes his magnum and dagger with him to chess club (Revenge of the Nerds?), Peter was sipping whiskey with his shotgun (suicide watch), and Juniper had her big knife for protection from sleazy rave-boys. Marty just has sage and a dimebag, not even his dog.
- Everyone runs into the gates, Juniper hides behind a house, everyone else closes the gate and then takes off. The MASSIVE Mariner slams his fist through the gate, which crashes open, and pursues us.
- He gets Marty’s ankles with barbed wire and Peter comes to the rescue with his shotgun. Juniper and Felix keep running ahead and the others follow. As Peter and Marty run, the monster looks (directs his porthole?) at them and they get a little tingle as the light passes over them. Felix turns and shoots the BEHEMOTH Boater, and gets whipped too
- Marty goes for the sack tap, but the monster has balls of steel.
- Marty gets a glitchy vision from Saul, but Juniper and Felix see nothing and it’s super dark. He screams “Lighthouse” ad nauseum and sprints off into the night. Juniper follows into the courtyard, with everyone else on their way.
- Conveniently timed lightning brings enough light that we all see the LIGHTHOUSE now
- BIG Boy bursts through the wall into the courtyard. Looks at (again, points his porthole at?) Marty and Peter who run off, Marty still screaming about the LIGHTHOUSE.
- In an attempt to protect them and buy some time, Juniper slide-tackles the monster and hamstrings him with her Big Knife™. On her second pass, she slashes at his other leg and he really doesn’t like that.
- This is where we find out that the whole looking thing is “marking” us for something. 😬. Juniper gets all tingly but ignores it in favor of running away.
- Once Juniper catches up to him, Peter shoots the SIZEABLE Sailor in the head, cracking the very creepy helmet and making it even more off putting. Unfortunately, this just gets Peter decked in the face.
- After getting his shit wrecked, Peter runs after Juniper and the others toward the LIGHTHOUSE
- Felix vaguely feels that this is related to Norse Mythology….something something revenge on towns with unmanned lighthouses.
- Marty keeps fucking running to the shore and finds a boat, still screaming, attempting to convey to Felix to get in by pointing and not using his actual words.
- Juniper throws Peter into the other rowboat bodily and pushes the boat offshore….
- That’s suspicious, that’s weird
- The HERCULEAN Helmsman is on the shoreline trying to whip them, but instead of getting hurt, God let us lose some inventory, including weapons, oars, and Marty’s last roach (the real tragedy).
- One oar left per boat, so we tie them together and Do Our Best
- Turns out the LIGHTHOUSE is uhhhhhhhh not great as far as vacation destinations go
- It needs a new landscaper, the current one just decorates with hanged corpses and barbed wire
- The COLOSSAL Captain is hot on our tails, but Felix pulls out his handy dandy wire cutters, that he apparently also takes to chess club.
- Surprise! The LIGHTHOUSE is full of stairs!!!! And traps!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- FIRST FLOOR - Juniper is the one who finds the traps (oops). Marty is the only one who really escapes the first floor without issue, although Felix used a luck point to do the same.
- SECOND FLOOR - Peter loses his shotgun trying to help Marty and Felix needs a tetanus shot for the knife stuck in his ass.
- THIRD FLOOR - Marty jumps off the stairs and hits his head on the floor. Just kidding.
- FOURTH FLOOR - Shit goes down here - Felix falls and loses his bag, Marty gets a call from his boss
- I guess nothing happened on the fifth floor
- SIXTH FLOOR (INNER SANCTUM) - guess we should have just been calling this a house, because the light is broken. Marty is somehow the most observant all the sudden and he finds a can of kerosene, takes a wild fucking guess where to put it and pulls out his trusty lighter
- Boom. A lighthouse once more.
- There’s screaming from the lower floors of the LIGHTHOUSE, assumedly the SUPERSIZED Seafarer prefers the darkness. The room fills with a bright yellow light, and we are all returned to our regularly scheduled Wednesday night plans.
- Peter, Felix, and Marty see some faintly glowing blue runes when they return. Peter writes them down, Felix memorizes them, Marty points them out to Reg, but no one knows what they mean. Juniper saw nothing but the rave lights.
- I guess his real name is The Watcher. Keeper's note: I should have never revealed the name of the monster. Players naming the things offers more flavor and buy-in.
- I’m personally a fan of “Big Boy” myself.
- Peter wants to follow up with Felix, the only other real adult in the situation. They call Marty, and the three meet up. Juniper is a few hours away and honestly? Still kinda tripping balls. She can’t make it.
End of Mystery Questions
- Did we conclude the mystery? No
- Did we save someone? No
- Did we learn something new about the world? Yes runes (and lighthouses) have power. Teleportation is a possibility.
- Did we learn something about the hunters? Juniper is strong?? Marty can’t do anything without Reg around.
The Fifth Session - The Scottish Play
Based upon the superstitions surrounding the Shakespearn play Macbeth.
Session notes by the Keeper
- The group is made aware of a local theater company experiencing a series of unfortunate events
- The group is staging Macbeth
- During rehersal Erick Pinkard, the actor playing Banquo, is murdered during the scene when the three murders confront him
- The actor normally playing the Third Murderer was not present as he was in the hospital due to a sprained ankle suffered during rehearsal.
- Tucloc asks his spooky boss what is going on. His handler says he's got a bunch of things going on so he can't pinpoint it out of the blue and needs some context. They go back and forth and Tucloc's handler tells him it is a demon who consistently convinces witches to curse productions of Macbeth for having felt slighted by Shakespeare. The handler warns Tucloc to not interfere or fight the demon as that would go bad for Tucloc and his handler.
- The group heads to the theater. Talks the theater manager, poses as new stage hands working for Stella Lattimore
- Stella jokes and puns ensue
- The group heads into the auditorium making noise and gets a series of shoes chucked at them
- They go talk to Stella, then the actor, Joshua Shoemaker, who was supposed to be the third murderer.
- Felix ascends the catwalk and find a hex bag. Felix identifies this as being an item witches use to curse a place. Jack draws a pentagram on the map in hopes of finding the remaining hex bags, but forgets to turn the pentagram upside down like all metal heads know to do. Marty has a chat with the director and finds a hex bag and shit ton of shoes. Sadly, Stella is killed when the director mutters Macbeth and a giant cauldron smashes her to death. Stella!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Meanwhile Marty is busy trying to contact his Wiccian weed heads to find out where they are so the group can confront them.
- The group heads to the community center. Jack and Felix try to talk to the Wiccians. Marty is trying to glean info from the buyer, and Tucloc is off hunting someone he has never seen before. Eventually shit gets real and they find themselves confronting a real, no kidding demon. Things don't go well. Tucloc is being played with as the demon wants the hexbags back.
- Jack somehow has them in his backpack and like a badass bursts through the glass windows to run to safety. The group not knowing what to do acts independently with some acting the demon, while Tucloc still tries to plead for merch. Tucloc has the great idea to call Jack to come back with the hexbags to make it all ok.
- Unbeknownest to everyone Jack really didn't run away and was outside the window. He takes a shot with a spicy water gun to no avail. In return the demon chucks a spear it summoned out of nowhere into his thigh pinning Jack to the ground. Marty manages to slice of a forearm of the demon before getting slugged in the jaw and sent flying into the wall. Tucloc makes a split second decision to telekinetically pull the hexbags that fell out from Jack's bag over to the demon. She picks them up and disappears.
- Oh yeah, Marty was told to kill the demon and him and Tucloc had strong words after the demon disappeared. Jack took a deck of cards he found in Felix's lair. Totally nothing strange about those deck of cards. Felix is an amateur thespian, and Tucloc is a pretend stage designer.
- And I forgot the group did a lot of vamping while trying to distract the demon, and only two of them know it was a demon, while Marty was doing a shorter version of pulling the sword from his chest. Maybe he needs a new fireproof place to store the sword
The Sixth Session - ❄️ Special Snowflakes ❄️
Based upon "Special Snowflakes" from the Tome of Mysteries.
Session notes by Max, the player of Juniper Jones
- We all decided we need a vacation, so we went skiing!
- There’s a weird loud bang and snow and rock goes up in the air. Felix skied toward it but runs into some blond girl, knocking her over. Turns out it’s Victoria Price, and she starts heading to look for her cameraman. Juniper takes out her phone and sends a message to the group chat to make sure everyone starts heading toward it and gets on the quad chairlift. Reg and Marty jump onto a different chairlift heading that way. Tucloc was on the beginner chairlift and he gets off to investigate. We all meet up at the snowmaking center.
- We apparently feel a very special kind of cold. Snow falls and vision diminishes to about 5 feet, and Juniper is worried about everyone getting separated. Luckily, Felix finds some 550 cord that we use to hold onto each other. Before we go off, Tucloc makes a call to his handler. Handler isn’t very happy with his previous performance, he didn’t get any truly useful information.
- Marching Order: Diamond with Felix in front, Juniper on the left, Marty on the right, and Tucloc in the back.
- All of us but Marty see some WEIRD creatures in the edge of our vision. They’re the same color of the snow but in odd shapes and moving in very strange ways
- Marty gets hit with something because he didn’t want to wear his armor, “AHHHH The gremlins got me!!” Tucloc turns and sees a crystalline creature made of ice and snow with pieces of twigs sharpened to a point at the end of what looks like it might be limbs?
- It’s only a lil guy tho, just a lil dude (3-4 ft tall). Tucloc raptor screams in our general directions, and then telekinesis’d the one that attacked Marty.
- Juniper tries to hit the thing that attacked Marty with her knife, but force pushes it instead. (oops)
- Felix asks for Marty’s lighter - Marty goes to find it and Felix tells him that he doesn’t need it but that Marty should start setting things on fire.
- The reason Felix didn’t need it is because he just so happened to have an acetylene torch in his bag, NEAT. Marty tries to set the things on fire and loses his lighter in the process. However, one creature goes down.
- Editorial Note: To recap, there are 3 monsters left - one with 2 Legz, one that moves like a weird snow-snail, and one we’ll just call Crab Olaf.
- 2 Legz charges Marty and Tucloc. It opens its maw and has jagged icicle-like teeth, which it uses to bite Tucloc.
- Snail comes after Juniper, slashing at her with it’s twig-like limbs.
- Crab Olaf takes on Felix with his very pointy icicle thing, because it doesn’t have limbs like the others.
- Marty starts shooing away 2 Legz and it works pretty well.
- 2 Legz dies and its teeth dissolved into a puddle, that we somehow notice even in the snow.
- Tucloc goes after slug, burning its limbs. Felix melts the hell out of Crab Olaf with his torch. Juniper takes a big chunk out of slug, prompting it to attempt an escape. Tucloc takes care of that though.
- Meanwhile, back at the lodge… lots of screams
- Juniper turns to run toward the screams. Marty locates his lighter and makes a new, stinky flaming weapon. Everyone else follows.
- More weird snowmen, doing weird things. A couple building something, one chasing a family around the slopes.
- Tucloc tells Felix and Juniper to go after the snowmen, while he and Marty save the family.
- Felix tries to set Juniper’s knife on fire with EVOO he found in his bag, and somehow it works?? She uses it to melt one of the creatures building a snowman, causing the other one to retaliate in fear.
- Marty and Tucloc run toward the creature terrorizing the family. Marty gives Tucloc a healing shoulder massage.Tucloc kills the creature while Marty protects him, and the family just keeps screaming.
- Juniper goes to attack the remaining creature. There was still a little flame on her big knife, but instead of doing much real damage she loses her knife. Felix runs in wildly waving his torch, narrowly missing Juniper and killing the creature.
- Juniper pees just a little
- Marty and Tucloc tell the family to follow them back toward the lodge, and they meet up with the other 2 party members on the way. Marty notices that a giant wall of snow was breaking through the treeline.
- This isn’t a regular snow, this is advanced snow.
- Marty gives Tucloc another massage.
- Time to head toward the snowmaking center. Juniper stays on the perimeter keeping an eye out, noticing that there are lots of random trails that look suspiciously like they came from snow creatures.
- How do we feel about arson? Great!!
- Tucloc herds the family toward the lodge. Marty says he has a plan (oh god), we just need his sword and the rope. There’s a montage where he reaches into his chest and pulls out his sword, and we can see that his extra ribs kinda form into the handle (drama queen). He asks Juniper and Felix to wrap the rope around one side of a tree while he smacks at it until it falls onto the metal building.
- Promising.
- As Tucloc and the family get close to the lodge, they see a woman and a cameraman. The woman introduces herself as Victoria Price and shoves a mic in his face asking what’s going on. He pretends not to speak english but eventually caves - he keeps trying to blow her off but she calls him on his buillshit.
- He essentially directs her to the snowmaking area, continuing to play dumb, and she turns to head off in that direction. Tragically, she is unable to be stalled by Tucloc’s podcast discussion because she doesn’t truly believe. She sends Bob (the cameraman) to keep going and ignores Tucloc’s further attempts at stopping her.
- SNOWMAKING CENTER - trees fall down and burn buildings, so Juniper preps her knife and a defensive stance.
- 4 new creatures enter the play, plus that weird bad snow is still coming.
- Everyone is surprised Marty’s plan worked, but Marty (and Chris, if we’re being honest here) is jubilant that his montage plan worked.
- 2 of the 4 beings moved in our direction, a Roly Poly, which attacks Juniper, and a Tripod, which attacks Felix. The other 2 beings head toward the Bad Snow:™:.
- Marty bumps theRoly Poly into the Tripod.
- Felix, FINISH HIM (roly poly down).
- Victoria finally arrives with Bob and Tucloc is trailing behind.
- Juniper sees that the building fire is mostly put out and the scary snow is destabilized. Lucky for us, the Tripod is slowly melting. She decides to check out the building.
- She finds some weird cone shaped objects sticking out of the top of charred remains of artificial snowmakers. It seems...other worldly, so she keeps it for further study.
- Marty gazes proudly at his burnt tree, even pointing out to Victoria that we were the ones that burned down the building. She keeps looking at his sword because it’s just out. Marty’s famous magic tricks...he shoved it in his own back this time.
- Victoria asks the group if they know anything about what’s going on. Juniper says that Victoria’s guess is good as hers. Felix puts some of the melted snow in a vial to take back to the haven.
- Juniper plays dumb and asks Victoria about what the monsters looked like. Juniper gets her phone number on a business card.
- Tucloc is winking at Juniper but she flat out ignores that.
- Juniper grabs some more of the weird metal, and everyone goes back to the condos.
End of Mystery Questions
- Did we conclude the mystery? No, not really
- Did we save someone? Yes
- Did we learn something new and important about the world? Yeah there’s this weird new metal?
- Did we learn something about the hunters? Yes - Felix carries a lot of weird shit in his bag
The Seventh Session - A Very Bloody Night Before Christmas
What if Santa's reindeer had powers similar to their names, and were hungery for human flesh?
